JERRY PAPER YOUR COCOON

When Jerry Paper initially shared ‘Your Cocoon’ (his first release after signing to Stones Throw), he explained that this project was to portray and explore an exaggerated version of himself: "On stage and in recordings I embody an exaggerated version of my 'self,' pushing it to a limit where I transcend my ego, in an effort to get the audience to shed their ideas of themselves, shed their egos, and be free. Jerry Paper is me at my freest, an ego sacrifice in an attempt to get people to do the same." Well, it doesn’t get any more fantastical than in the CGI visuals that this Los Angeles musician has commissioned for ‘Your Cocoon’. The video is centred around a post-apocalyptic nightmare crossed with an acid trip… that’s our best guess at what’s happening here, anyway. The warped vocals of Jerry Paper become even more mechanical as our eyes meet his bodiless, animatronic head, which jauntily bops along with this psychedelic slacker-pop tune. As we’re pulled along by the laidback rhythms were treated to ever stranger images, including a plastic koala doing the twist, a space clown, piles of radioactive garbage, a crumbling fortress, and that’s all before the clown decides to pick up Jerry Paper’s head, take him into the stratosphere and find true happiness by painting the now satellite bonce as a clown. We challenge you to find a weirder music video that’s paired with a such a delightful, repeat-worthy indie track. - Hannah Thacker
